A five-month-old girl died yesterday after being mauled by two rottweiler dogs guarding a pub.

The baby's parents are believed to have been staying at the pub in Leicester while standing in for the landlord, who was away.

Witnesses say the girl was in her cot upstairs when she was seized by one of the dogs and dragged out on to a flat roof, where both set upon her. The alarm was raised but she died in hospital.

Neighbours said that the dogs, Bruno and Bess, were owned by Wayne and Lesley Glaze, who run The Rocket, on the city's New Parks estate. Mr and Mrs Glaze are believed to have left the pub with Mrs Glaze's son, Lee, and his girlfriend, Amy, while they went on holiday. Friends named the baby as Caydee-Lee, the young couple's daughter, although police would not confirm that.

Leicestershire police said: "Officers and ambulance personnel were called to living quarters at The Rocket public house, in Stephenson Drive.

"The baby was rushed to Leicester Royal Infirmary but died of her injuries. The rottweilers have been destroyed."

After the tragedy at around 4pm, flowers and teddy bears were left outside the closed pub.

Amy Grimbley, a neighbour, said: "The dogs are known to be vicious. They are guard dogs. They stay on the roof during the day and whenever you walk past you get the feeling they could just jump down and attack you.

"They are very aggressive. Everybody around here is petrified of them. There is a school opposite the pub, for both infants and juniors and nobody is really happy walking their kids past the pub after school."

Nathan Newitt, 16, a student who collects glasses at the Rocket, said: "No one can believe what has happened.

"Bruno and Bess are more like guard dogs than pets and I did not have much contact with them. There has never been a problem before."

Jill Downs, 50, said: "I felt sick when I heard. I have grandchildren of my own.

"The dogs are always on the roof. I see them up there every morning on my way to work. They are certainly not pets — they are guard dogs and that's what they are there for."

Another resident, Gwendoline Brooks, 81, said: "They have always had big dogs at the pub. I think they had a couple of alsatians before. I always see the two rottweilers prowling around on the roof. They look powerful — I wouldn't trust them."

Five weeks ago a boy of four needed 200 stitches in his face after being attacked by an American bulldog.

George Brown was playing near his home in Huntingdon, Cambs, when he was mauled. A neighbour dragged the dog away.

A woman of 30 and a 38-year-old man from Huntingdon have been charged with allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control in a public place and are due to appear before magistrates on Wednesday.
